THE HISTORY OF TASHAN VILLAGE: EXPLORATION

Abstract

The article is based on field materials collected by the authors during an ethnographic expedition in 2019 to the village of Tashan, Boryspil district, Kyiv region. The basis of the investigation is the oral evidence of the residents of the village regarding the Ukrainian folk clothes, women’s jewelry, rituals, and the national calendar. The basis of the study is the field notes of the authors, when information was received directly from the natives in the form of individual communication and observation. Most of the respondents are villagers born in 1928–1941. Information about peasant life, customs, rites, ritual calendar, information about the native village from the perspective of children’s and youth’s observations was collected through field interviews. The authors of the article accumulated valuable field material on culture and everyday life, in particular, conducted an ethnolinguistic audio recording, collected narratives from oral history, recorded data on wedding rituals, childbirth, determined the state of material culture based on the traditional clothing of Ukrainians in this particular village, types of economic activity. The village of Tashan is an ancient Ukrainian village in the Pereyaslav region with its interesting history, customs, rituals and attractive respondents. The authors’ attention was drawn to this village by its history, namely the residence of prince K. Horchakov in the village. However, not only the history of the village was in the field of view. A significant place in the field study is devoted to the study of women’s shirts, wedding wreaths, women’s jewelry, and wedding rituals. Unfortunately, it is difficult to fully find out the information about the type of cord wreath, that is, the combination of two wedding wreaths, which were mentioned by researchers L. Hodlina and L. Hladun in the article “The use of folk clothing in the wedding rituals of the Middle Dnieper of the end of the 19th century – the first half 20th centuries” [1], did not succeed. Most of the respondents were born during the Soviet period and do not remember those old wreaths that used to live in their village. It was also not possible to fully find out which white necklace was sewn to the bottom of the coral one. The presented ethnographic materials can be used for a thorough study of the native land, its historical region, the state in general and for further research of various areas of the material and spiritual culture of Ukrainians.
