THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CLERGY OF THE LVIV DIOCESE DURING THE SOVIET REGIME ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE SERVICE OF FATHER RAFAL KERNYTSKYІ

Abstract

The study of the position of the Roman Catholic Church in the Soviet period is primarily characterized by the significant influence of anti-religious policy, which had a negative meaning primarily for priests and laymen of the Church. In the article, on the example of the priest of the Lviv Diocese, fr.Vladyslav Rafal Kernytskyi reveals the position of the Church and the conditions of priests’ activities during the period of the totalitarian atheistic regime. With the help of historical sources and personal memories of the priest, it was possible to investigate the conditions in which fr. Vladyslav carried out pastoral activities and established the peculiarities of his contribution to the activity of the Church in the territory of the Lviv Diocese. The relevance of the research lies in the objective coverage of the activities of the Church and its pastor during the period of Soviet power, which is based on records of the priest’s personal memories and archival data. A feature of the religious activity of fr. Vladyslav’s great involvement in all processes of the Church’s activity, dedicated service for the needs and welfare of the laity, cooperation with children and young people who did not have access to church services. The position and activity of the priest during the period of imprisonment in the concentration camps, where fr. Vladyslav Rafal carried out pastoral work underground. The article in its entirety reveals the position of the Roman Catholic Church regarding the fulfillment of its missionary duties during the Soviet regime, which is manifested in the sacrificial activity of the representative of the Lviv diocese, fr. Vladyslav Rafal Kernytskyi.
