CULTURAL PROCESSES IN BEREST REGION DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION (1941–1944)
Abstract
The article analyzes the course of cultural life on the territory of the Berest Gebiet during Nazi occupation. Attention is drawn to the fact that during the summer of 1941 – the spring of 1942, the authorities didn’t make significant obstacles to the activities of cultural institutions, wanting to win the support of local residents in that way. It has been proven that two cinemas operated in Berest during the researched period – one for the service of Wehrmacht soldiers and another for the city’s population. The number of spectators who visited them is established. The use of these institutions by the occupation administration for propaganda purposes is highlighted. Attention is drawn to the activity of the libraries. The schedule of their work is described, the number of users is counted. It has been proven that the lack of a reading room in one of the libraries made it difficult for readers to familiarize themselves with periodicals. Book publishing in the region is also analyzed. It is established that during 1941–1944 it was represented by anti-Soviet literature and calendars. The functioning of the extensive network of branches of the cultural and educational society “Prosvita” in the Brest region is shown. The purpose and forms of its work are described. The activity of the Ukrainian Help Committee is highlighted. Attention is drawn to the fact that sport was an important form of leisure for the residents of Berest. It has been proven that handball, football, athletics and cycling were the most popular sports during the German occupation. The development of schooling in the region is analyzed. The position of the leading figures of the National Socialist Party regarding the possibility of education for the population of the eastern occupied territories is highlighted. The number of teachers and students is set. It has been proven that in the researched period, senior schoolchildren were involved in the collection of medicinal plants and their labour was used in agriculture. The phenomena that made a negative impact on the course of the educational process are shown: the lack of Ukrainian schools and the lack of documentation in the Berest district administration on the state of education in the city.
