CRIMINAL CASES OF A DOMESTIC NATURE AS A METHOD OF THE SOVIET REGIME'S STRUGGLE AGAINST DISSIDENT HANNA MYKHAILENKO IN THE 1970S
Abstract
The article examines criminal cases of a domestic nature, which served as one of the means of the Soviet regime’s struggle against dissident Hanna Mykhailenko in the 1970s. The source base of the article includes previously classified documents of a criminal case opened against the human rights activist from the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSA SSU) in the Odessa region, as well as a collection of materials “KGB Diagnosis: Schizophrenia”, which publishes an interview with her and some documents from her case. The authors carefully analyze the prerequisites, course and results of the trials against H. Mykhailenko in 1977 and 1979. The work uses methods of analysis and synthesis, problem-chronological, retrospective, and the method of comparing and contrasting information from various sources to establish an objective picture of events. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the outlined problem has not yet become the subject of full-fledged study in modern Ukrainian historiography. The authors conclude that the active participation of H. Mykhailenko in the human rights movement in Odessa could not remain unnoticed by the Committee for State Security (KGB). The criminal cases initiated against her in 1977 and 1979 were used by the Soviet special services as an instrument of targeted moral pressure on the dissident, her reputational damage and discrimination in society. Both proceedings were initiated during the period of the activation of the human rights movement, caused by the creation of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group (UHG). The investigation in these cases was of a formalized nature The KGB bodies directly intervened in the course of the investigations, in particular through pressure and intimidation of witnesses. The persecution of H. Mykhailenko in the 1970s became the basis for the launch of a new repressive campaign against her, which led to the fabrication of a criminal case in 1980 under purely political articles of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR and the imprisonment of the dissident in a special psychiatric hospital.
